Um Slaim Collective was established to investigate the displacement of najdi architecture in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The work operates on themes of participation, research and documentation of architectural typologies under threat of demolition and redevelopment. As well as critically examining the effects of urban expansion in central Riyadh and evident loss of architectural identity in an era of accelerated sprawl. In this project we aim to address the relationship between architecture and the earth in regards to the materiality of najdi vernacular architecture and contemporary ecological issues and questions we are facing in the city. 


The collective operates on an Interdisciplinary collaboration to push boundaries that are essential for the integration of ideas, processes, and fabrication.We believe in the importance of joint dialogue, collaborative thinking and in the collective spirit. A process by which efforts are made to connect individuals, practitioners, students, thinkers and makers; aimed at creating inclusive discussions, where active participation is involved. Looking at issues from various angles can lead to more developed outputs. 


The collective is led by architects Sara Alissa and Nojoud Alsudairi under the Situated Practice MA at the Bartlett School of Architecture UCL

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia&#38;nbsp;Research, Documentation and Experimentation

At the threshold of accelerated development, and faced with the potentially devastating impacts of climate change and the end of the ‘oil age’, questions are increasingly being asked on what types of buildings will be most resilient in the face of such challenges. We will look into existing structural conditions and identify opportunities for repair, restoration or intervention. We are working towards a number of on-site activations and workshops that will potentially provide more insight on the non-physical aspects of this analysis. It is also critical to engage with this site in various modes of art, research, and restoration practices in the realm of both architecture and urbanism.


Alfutah, Riyadh


The research lab is situated
between the Almurabba area and the Futah neighbourhood, which are connected to
the remaining vernacular spine in Aldirah and Um Slaim. The space used to be a
cafeteria two years ago and has been vacant ever since due to the
pre-gentrification of the surrounding area. The space retains its current
character but has undergone an interior refurbishment that is open to
collaborators and community members as a physical archive and research space.

Um Slaim lab is a space
devoted to the research into Najdi architecture and its morphology into our
current contemporary practice. A meeting point for individuals, practitioners
and thinkers from various fields and disciplines. The lab hosts different
activations that include material experimentations, screenings and talks around
the city’s past, present, and future.

	The project is a
critical investigation of building typologies in Riyadh’s old district, it aims
to identify the questions, and thus problems, of urban decay and inner-city
migration in the face of infrastructural development.
The work also aims to address the relationship between architecture and
the earth in regards to the contemporary ecological issues and questions we are
facing in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. As well as the loss of architectural identity. Looking into the fragments in the old part of the city provides the initial
analysis with an in-depth look into multiple examples of Najdi architecture. We
will look into existing structural conditions and identify opportunities for
repair, restoration or intervention.

Intervention III: The conservatory

The tactile extension of the mudhouse expresses the movement of displacement of Najdi adobe architecture, and memorializes a cultural and personal attachment to place.

The installation consists of a fabric cladded membrane that shelters the adobe structure and its existing condition. The installation falls short under the prerequisite for a formal restoration, and therefore does not touch the existing structure. However, it inserts itself into the edge of the deteriorating relic, and extends its projected lifespan. The “installation” memorializes the adobe structure through which personal and architectural najdi identities are maintained. This shell engages with the existing site and emphasizes a concern of the loss or dispersal of the space inside.&#38;nbsp; 

It is situated in an empty site on the main highway on King Fahad road, south of central Riyadh. The fallen structure sits outside of Riyadh’s old wall and is believed to have been a small farmland in the past century, what physically remains is part of a one-story structure, half of a courtyard, and two distinct slices through rooms on either end. Most importantly, what remains is the memory of the city, materially encapsulated in part of a house.

Intervention IV: Material testimonies

The physical process of collecting can become a site of encounter. For our fourth urban intervention, we performed an architectural analysis on a deteriorating mud house that is at 80 percent decay, situated in the Alfutah neighborhood adjacent to the lab. Through examining the remains on the site, we begin to better understand its ephemeral components. The collected fragments include the original mud-bricks used to construct the house, as well as added material that has accumulated over the years, including decorative tiles and fragments of the cement plastering on its exterior shell.

Intervention II: Fallen Structures 

In 2012, a restoration campaign was initiated in Najran, a city south of Saudi known for its traditional adobe architecture. The phrase “ لا يطيح'' was its slogan, it loosely translates to “Don’t let it fall” referring to the fragility of earthen structures when they are left unmaintained. To continue this mission, We’ve put together a poster around the same phrase and have installed it on the exterior of some of the mud houses under immediate threat.&#38;nbsp;

Following the failed applications to obtain a restoration permit for one of the deteriorating mudhouses in old riyadh, we attempted to further understand the process for aquiring these permits and the effect of the area’s proposed redevelopment on these neglected structures.&#38;nbsp;

This proformative intervention explores a site that falls on the main highway south of central Riyadh. The vacant mudhouse is sinking slowly into the empty plot, which is used by truck drivers to park their large vehicles.&#38;nbsp;

This column of fabric suspended on the house’s facade illustrates the twelve steps to obtain a permit. the fabric serves as an interface between the administrative framework of restoration and the ephemeral nature of the materials that these sites are composed of.&#38;nbsp;

Historically there has not been much in the written framework for the development of the vernacular fabric of the Najd region; the process of control has gradually evolved from the implicit, partial, and vague form to a more institutionalized, explicit, and specific form, with the defined sets of regulations modern times. Broadly speaking, vernacular Najdi architecture can be divided into three primary geographic areas: the southern area (‘Arid, al-Yamamah, al-Hawta and al-Aflãj), the central area (Sudayr), and a northern area (Qassim). These primary regions have similar architectural traditions in their civic buildings but identifiable regional variations in residential design. The materiality of the vernacular structures reflects the natural environment and available resources for building: stone for foundations, adobe walls, palm for shading, and the most scarce resource, wood, as the outward expression of personality in the form of highly decorated door.

Other forms of restoration&#38;nbsp;


Other Forms of Restoration is an exploration into the poetics of restoring an adobe building. By taking reference to the dominant themes of loss and memory in arabic poetry that relate to the changing states of being, I begin to employ poetry as a form of writing that responds to the abandoned adobe structures in Umm Slaim. The poems are casted with earthen bricks that are made to reconstruct parts of a mud-house. The poems written in response to the site touch on both the physical and intangible spatial narratives of the place. It is a collaborative project that looks into the&#38;nbsp;politics and displacement of earth as a material, as well as the implications of language in altering our perceptions of sites and memories. Umm Slaim is a neighborhood situated in the historic district south-west of the city. It continues to house a number of communities that are mostly still living in original adobe structures. These spaces hold testimony to the native architectural practices that have preceded the city’s post-oil expansion. The exploration starts with the site of a two-story mud-house sliced through its center, but a part of the house remains with its original interiors. It was demolished to make room for a parking lot, and a significant number of adobe structures continue to disappear in the face of gentrification and rapid commercial redevelopment. The writing ultimately aims to connect poetry with the spatial, political, and cultural circumstances of the site in both materialism and consciousness. In light of rapid flux and expansion, it becomes apparent&#38;nbsp;that what we sometimes succeed in keeping elements in our built environment that are negligible compared to what we might lose.


Building voids


Building voids explores the lost narrative of desert landscapes in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in the form of site-writing. A genre that enables us to articulate knowledge as a transformative process of meaningmaking the spatial qualities of writing. The work aims to address the existential relationship and the interpersonal silences between architecture and the earth. In this exploration, I begin to analyze the displaced landscapes that inhabit a residential neighborhood Al Narjis in the northern area of the city, where it is undergoing a development project that neglects its desert landscape by erasing its topography. I intend to invite reflection on the abusive exploitation of land and critically examine the effects of urban sprawl and expansion in the city. The visual tensions generated from the sliced landscapes offer an insight into the violent practices of property developers against nature. The ecologically ruinous approach to development results in the indefinite breakage of earth as land and material. Desert landscapes are often perceived as secondary in the classification of nature that is worth preserving, in many cases they are almost disregarded as nature. These landscapes are more than dramatic escarpments, desert biomes are crucial to the plant’s ecosystem. The intertextuality and the constructing of various voices as a way of positioning, where interwoven perspectives help shape my understanding of the evident loss of topographical identity in this era of accelerated development. In light of rapid flux and expansion, it becomes apparent that what we succeed in keeping elements in our landscape that are negligible compared to what we might lose. The work speaks to the larger community of the city and the ecological victims of negligence and consumption.&#38;nbsp;
